Adopting a dog can be expensive

Today I had the pleasure of meeting up with Sven & Sandra who had previously adopted Choban & Lingling from the shelter and now were interested in taking on another family member.

I introduced them to Sherry, the Bull Terrier abandoned yesterday and we stayed with her a little while in her separate enclosure (as we are never sure wheat a new doggy might bring with them!) and Sherry played ball and sniffed us out. Her skin looks very inflammed and one eye is partially closed. I will take her to the vet along with 6 others tomorrow and then we can maybe get an indication of her condition.

Big was following us around as is his want and Jimmy even jumped on a table to show he is agile after his long rest in the shade today (all day).

Sven & Sandra have been to the shelter many times and are so relaxed with the residents. As is Sven's habit, he empties his pockets onto a table so that things like sunglasses, phone & wallet are not so cumbersome in his pockets when moving round the shelter. ( Well that's what I thought he did it for...anyway).

They had come to see Dainne and said they would like to adopt her. We socialised with her and Sandra was certain she would get on ok with LingLing & Choban back home.

As we were talking, I noticed a shining coin on the floor and then some more and I picked up the money. Suddenly Sven started the Airport Security pat down routine on himself and then looked at the table. "My wallet"!!!

We searched all over the place for it and finally found Jack ripping the last shreds of the leather apart. "the money.........my Driving Licence!!! and ....... oh no the new ATM Card I just got after a long wait!!!"

Poor Sven was laughing and we made light of the fun the dogs must have had with all that smelly stuff but to see the state of all his wallet contents made me realise we should have safety deposit boxes for visitors at the entrance.

But at the end of the day, Sven & Sandra decided to adopt Dianne and they will give her the new name of Anna

Sunshine gets his op

Today I took Sunshine along to the clinic for removal of the pin from his leg. Whilst he is under anaesthetic, he will be sterilised too.

Also took along Donna for sterilisation. She is cute quiet fat thing!! Only young but already very chubby.

Mutt is back for a check on his Hepatitis, his gums are still very yellow and is still needing to be quarantined away from contact with other dogs as the parasites in his blood could pass to others through fleas or ticks. Vet commended to continue with the same meds and see again next week.
Jack came along for his final, final, final check on the status of his TvT before he is started on the pre-Hearthworm treatment of Aspirin. After a week he will then receive his Heartworm treatment which will consist of 2 injections within 24 hours of each other. Vet did liver & kidney function checks of blood and said the readings were within normal range. He is 21.7Kg and his kidney reading is .79 & liver 43.8. He said there was need to x-ray as the readings were good and the sound of the heart was indicating stage 1 or 2 of the Heartworm disease..

Misha came for much the same as Jack. Final check before starting Heartworm treatment and a check as to why she is bleeding from her Vulva still after 1 month of heat already. Found that the bleeding today had stopped and the smear taken was completely devoid of any blood !! I was happy for her to have finally stopped her heat. Her Kidney & Liver blood tests showed .65 & 36.4 respectively and after an Xray she was confirmed to be at stage 3. Her heart appears to be weak and she will need to have 3 injections for the complete removal of the Heartworms.

And finally today, 2 of the remaining pups of Leonie, Leo & Larry. Both have round worms in their diarrhea and should be de-wormed asap. Both were shoing nasal discharge and very weak.

Picked up Sunshine in the evening and the vet was alarmed that he could not remove the pin as planned. Instead he just cut off the protruding length from the top. It seemed that calcification was so advanced that the pin had joined with the bone and was immovable.

Fe's Puppy's go down hill

Took Jack along for a further heck on his willy, to see if the TvT has gone away yet, so we can start with his Heartworm treatment. The vet said the floral growth was as small as it was likely to get ( just like NuDee) and we should start the Asprin treatment asap in preparation for the injections.

Also with me was an adult called Anny who according to Kh Yom, had green poo. Well, the vet couldn't find anything wrong with her and suggested we just observe for a few days.

Next was a puppy dumped at a temple, Judy, she has watery lungs, lethargic, slightly hard pads but no fever.

Then there were Fe's 6 puppy's. Today as I put them on the vets inspection table, I named them for the first time. Tinker,Tonka,Tommy Boy,Tabby,Tammy & of course Tayler.

After a systematic check of their faeces and lungs, the vet diagnosed half of them with Distemper. They had a combination of watery lungs, temperature, diarrhea all except Tommy Boy. He was the strongest.

The vet explained to me that the 4 signs of Distemper to watch for were:

1. Cough & then water on the lungs
2. Diarrhea
3. Lethargy
4. and then after about a week, Hardpad

Learning all the time.

It's all bad from here on in!

Took Jack along for a VD check today. Yes the TvT is still there but no more shots as he has had his course of injections and we are waiting for the last remnant of the floral growth to disappear. Vet said that it was possible for some small scar type tissue to remain.

Brought along 3 dumped puppy's from a local temple. Vet diagnosed Pneumonia and prescribed antibiotics and cough suppressant.

Also with me today are Fe's 6 puppy's. No bacteria today but worms instead. (Were the bacteria the larvae of worms? Need to find out) These pups are now 5 weeks old.

Money is tight

TvT treatment for each dog per injection costs on average, 380 baht. This gets expensive when you consider the dog will need about 7 injections.

So today I am at a vets practice who has agreed to use Vincristine (Chemotherapy) that we have purchased and only charge us 100 baht each for the services of him injecting it.

The nights are getting cool now, the sun is down by 6pm and today Royla Flora is very busy, so the journey back & forth takes twice as long.

Jack & Chok are with me and they are quite happy for their excursion from the shelter.
