Dog Contest - Well posed dog pics

Any one who has ever tried to photograph dogs, by encouraging them to sit in one spot whilst their camera boots up, focuses & takes the shot that 30 seconds before looked so perfect, will realise that this masterpiece captured by Karin this week was an opportunity not to be missed.

These 3 beauties took it upon themselves to arrange where they sat. In reverse order, the winners are...... Mira for her agility, Samli for her serenity & Bessy for having such courage to climb all that way without having complete hip joints. Also captured at a right moment were Bobby & Emma bedding down for a sleep and Sherry who is just a sociable girl, who likes to sleep on the window sill!

Chiang Mai folks dump 30,000 pup - Why?

Sherry is not Sheila or Sarah!! I think I had too many Amontilado's!

Today I took 6 doggy's to the vet for check ups on various bits & pieces and took Sherry the Bull Terrier along with me. I also returned DamKaow to Airport Plaza car park where she came from a few weeks ago with crushed feet & in need of sterilisation. She is fit & well now and when she returned the other residents of the car park welcomed her.

Dr Piyapong did a skin scrape of Bailey's neck & Sherry's head ( too many drinks here !) and both proved positive for Dermodex Mange. He recommended daily Ivomectin orally for both.

The vet said that in his opinion, Sherry was only about a year old and there was nothing physically wrong with her, except for the Mange. He suggested the condition was possibly about 6 months old and asked why on earth anyone would just dump a puppy worth 30,000 baht (450 GB pound). Poor thing. I gave her a few chews back at the shelter and she loved them.

Adopting a dog can be expensive

Today I had the pleasure of meeting up with Sven & Sandra who had previously adopted Choban & Lingling from the shelter and now were interested in taking on another family member.

I introduced them to Sherry, the Bull Terrier abandoned yesterday and we stayed with her a little while in her separate enclosure (as we are never sure wheat a new doggy might bring with them!) and Sherry played ball and sniffed us out. Her skin looks very inflammed and one eye is partially closed. I will take her to the vet along with 6 others tomorrow and then we can maybe get an indication of her condition.

Big was following us around as is his want and Jimmy even jumped on a table to show he is agile after his long rest in the shade today (all day).

Sven & Sandra have been to the shelter many times and are so relaxed with the residents. As is Sven's habit, he empties his pockets onto a table so that things like sunglasses, phone & wallet are not so cumbersome in his pockets when moving round the shelter. ( Well that's what I thought he did it for...anyway).

They had come to see Dainne and said they would like to adopt her. We socialised with her and Sandra was certain she would get on ok with LingLing & Choban back home.

As we were talking, I noticed a shining coin on the floor and then some more and I picked up the money. Suddenly Sven started the Airport Security pat down routine on himself and then looked at the table. "My wallet"!!!

We searched all over the place for it and finally found Jack ripping the last shreds of the leather apart. "the money.........my Driving Licence!!! and ....... oh no the new ATM Card I just got after a long wait!!!"

Poor Sven was laughing and we made light of the fun the dogs must have had with all that smelly stuff but to see the state of all his wallet contents made me realise we should have safety deposit boxes for visitors at the entrance.

But at the end of the day, Sven & Sandra decided to adopt Dianne and they will give her the new name of Anna

Bull Terrier abandoned in a cage

Tonight I received a call from a concerned guy, David, from the Doi Saket area of Chiang Mai, as he had found an abandoned caged dog whilst walking his own dog on some waste land.

I met him near the location and this was off the main road, in a piece of scrub / dumped rubbish area, with piles rubble & general trash. Even if someone had given me directions, I would not have found the place.

The dog, a Bull Terrier, was in a blue cage, similar to our transport cages, with the door firmly wired shut. The dog was obviously distressed and I could see there were signs of bleeding around the nose & mouth from desperate attempts to escape his prison cell.

David told me that he had first walked his dog here this morning and had not seen the caged dog. But on the evenings circuit walk he makes twice every day, he heard the cries of this caged dog behind the piles of rubbish.

Growling at any movement towards the cage, I thought it best to cover it and scared for the safety of the dog as well as my own(fingers & thumbs), we wrapped the cage in the tarpaulin I have for the truck which seemed to calm the dog down immediately.

We lifted the cage using bamboo poles back to the truck, like a jungle expedition party.

Once back at the shelter, we opened the door of the cage and offered the frightened creature some water. She stayed in the cage, scared even more by the strange surroundings and the distant noise of the other shelter residents.

Lets hope in the light of day, she can relax enough to come out and find her balance. Why was she dumped? Who could do that to a dog, any dog, let alone a gorgeous Bull Terrier.

On the way home I kept thinking why someone could ump her. Could she have behaviour problems, could she have bitten someone and caused the owner to react this way? Did she have health problems or did someone just get tired of her?

I named her Sherry.
